Tobruk: The First Battle

In early January 1941, after an encircling
maneouver, effectively cutting off Italian
communications and operations to the large
scale peninsular town of Tobruk, the British
attacked the defenses of the town with the 7th
Armoured Division and the 6th Australian Infantry
Division. After fierce fighting, the Italian "Sirte"
Division could not hold the 54km front line and with
all or most of their armour smashed, the British
poured through the holes in the Italian defenses
and effectively beseiged the remaining forces
garrisoned at Tobruk. Tobruk surrendered to
O'Connells men on 22nd, it would be 18 months
before the Italians would return and take it back.

Tobruk: The Second Battle

After the arrival of Rommel's DAK (Afrika Korps)
to North Africa, and after sweeping victories
in Libya, Tobruk once again became the focus
of the Desert War, and in June 1942, the German
Panzers along with the Italian X and XXI army corps,
making up the bulk of the attacking forces broke
through the British perimenter defenses, and Tobruk
once more became a beseiged town.
The fighting lasted 24 hours, brave Allied troops
holding a rearguard to enable the withdrawal of the
British garrison. It was a disaster for the British over
33.000 prisoners taken, and a bitter defeat leading
to the commanding officer being replaced by Churchill.
By August the British 8th Army had a new
commander which would change the course of the
war and give the Germans their first taste of Defeat.
